Welcome to the Global Ocean Race, the pinnacle of Class40 yacht racing. Established in 2008, our race stands as a testament to the spirit of adventure and the relentless pursuit of sailing excellence.
Our Legacy
Born from the vision of seasoned yachtsmen Josh Hall and Brian Hancock, the Global Ocean Race (formerly known as Portimão Global Ocean Race) is a biennial event that has quickly carved out a niche in the world of offshore racing. Our race is designed for Class40 yachts, catering to both single-handed and double-handed crews. It’s not just a race; it’s a journey that tests skill, endurance, and the human spirit.
Race Profile
The Global Ocean Race is celebrated for its challenging route, which includes navigating the daunting Southern Ocean and the legendary Cape Horn. Covering approximately 30,000 nautical miles, the race demands not only sailing prowess but also strategic acumen and personal resilience.
Inaugural Journey
Our inaugural race in 2008-09 set the bar high, featuring a diverse fleet that embarked on a journey from Portimão, Portugal. Spanning five legs, the race touched the shores of Cape Town, Wellington, Ilhabela, Charleston, and returned to Portimão.
2011-12 Edition
The second edition, held in 2011-12, started from Palma, Majorca, and concluded in Les Sables-d’Olonne, France. This edition solidified the race’s reputation, attracting top sailors and presenting even more formidable challenges across its legs.
Our Commitment
At the Global Ocean Race, we are committed to promoting the spirit of offshore racing while ensuring safety and sustainability. We celebrate the diversity of our participants and the international sailing community. Our race is more than a competition; it’s a platform for pushing the boundaries of human and nautical potential.
Join us in this extraordinary adventure, where the ocean is not just a path, but a stage for some of the most inspiring stories in sailing. Welcome aboard the Global Ocean Race.
