Yacht Club Punta del Este

The Yacht Club Punta del Este (YCPE) began its formal existence on 14 February 1924. The first Meeting of the Board of Directors took place 3 months later at the Hotel España, on 26 May. The land where the main headquarters of the Club is located today was obtained from the State in 1932, and the club house was built in 1946.

The construction in 1980 of the “Yateste” annex made it possible to expand the Club facilities, a scant 100 metres from the main club house. In 1984 the Carrasco Yachting club house was built on the shores of the Carrasco lakes. The idea was to provide continuity to the Sailing School and competition fleet in a location closer to Montevideo, where most of the members reside during the winter. In 1985 the house next door to the “Yateste” annex was purchased to increase the array of services available to members.

The YCPE has previously hosted hugely popular stopovers of the Whitbread Round The World Race (now The Volvo Ocean Race) and the BOC Challenge (now the Velux5Oceans Race) and is the perfect location to host the South American stopover of the Global Ocean Race 2011-12 where the fleet will be berthed in the excellent marina facilities directly in front of the club house.

A warm Uruguayan welcome awaits the Global Ocean Race sailors in Punta del Este, at the Yacht Club Punta del Este, after a tough leg 3 across the Southern Ocean from Wellington, New Zealand during which they will round the infamous Cape Horn.
